Tesla’s Autopilot is far from perfect, but improvements are coming soon

Although Autopilot is one of Tesla’s most beloved features, the system is far from perfect and has plenty of room for improvement.

Elon Musk has teased us with version 11 of the Full Self Driving package for several months, and it appears it will arrive sooner than later.

So what benefits could that bring to a European driver who hasn’t purchased the FSD option?

First of all, FSD is not available in Europe yet and I don’t expect it to be available in the near future. Despite Tesla’s claims of its advanced software for years, they have been making slow progress in deploying the functionality to the general public.

Also regulation in Europe is a complete hell as they don’t only have to comply with the EU regulations as a whole but then do it country by country. This is something that is not in the fast-moving mind of Tesla which needs to speed up regulatory processes once they get over the technical part of the problem.

Driving on city streets vs driving on the highway

What makes FSD 11 so interesting for all Tesla owners is that, for the first time, they are going to merge the city streets stack and the highway stack.

Full Self Driving (FSD) software stack refers to the set of technologies and algorithms that are necessary to enable a vehicle to drive autonomously. It encompasses various components such as sensors, perception systems, decision-making systems, and control systems that work together to create a complete autonomous driving solution.

The FSD software stack is divided into two parts: the city streets stack and the highway stack. The city streets stack is designed to handle complex driving scenarios in urban environments where the vehicle must navigate through tight spaces, intersections, and unpredictable traffic patterns. This requires advanced perception systems that can accurately detect and classify objects in the environment and robust decision-making algorithms that can handle the dynamic nature of city driving.
